“The Keio University School of Medicine was founded in November, 1917, with renowned microbiologist Dr. Shibasaburo Kitasato serving as its first dean, with the purchase of former army land at Shinanomachi, in Yotsuya ward.

“In 1918, the original Faculty of Nursing and Medical Care was established. In 1920, Keio University Hospital opened a two-story building equipped with 196 patients rooms and about 400 beds, said to be the best at that time in Japan.

“Keio University Hospital offered comprehensive medical care by maintaining close communications between departments (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, orthopedics, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, dentistry, etc.).”
