“March 22 is ‘Founding Day’ for Japanese radio. On that day in 1925 the experimental broadcasts went forth from Atago Hill in Tokyo, the high place just north of the Tokugawa tombs at Shiba Park popular for its view of Edo and Meiji Tokyo … The first program on radio station JOAK was elevated and eclectic: Beethoven, classical Japanese music, a play by Tsubouchi Shouyo which sought to bring Kabuki and Shakespeare together. In 1926, NHK was founded and served as the government monopoly broadcasting corporation until 1951.”
